RESTAURANT REVIEW:

GUY'S BURGER JOINT ON
CARNIVAL BREEZE
by
Richard H. Wagner

Carnival Breeze Guy's Burger Joint
Some may debate whether the burgers at Guy's Burger Joint on Carnival Breeze are the best burgers on the high seas. However, there appears to be unanimous agreement that they are truly excellent burgers - - burgers amongst burgers.

Guy is Guy Fieri, television chef, cookbook author, and celebrity foodie. Carnival has arranged to bring his version of the American roadside burger to sea, utilizing his recipes and cooking style.

On Carnival Breeze, the venue that bears his name is located on the starboard side of the main pool area, next to the entrance to the ship's large buffet restaurant. It is sheltered from the elements by the mezzanine deck immediately above but is otherwise an open air venue.

The area is decorated so as to recall a road side eatery with various highway signs and plaques with witty sayings hung on wood panels. On one side is the counter area behind which the burgers are cooked and assembled. On the other, is a small seating area. However, guests can take their meals elsewhere on the open decks or into the neighboring buffet restaurant.

You walk up to the counter and give your order. Essentially, you can order either one of the burgers designed by Chef Fieri or a plain cheese burger.

If you order the latter, there is a toppings bar where you can concoct your own burger. According to the people behind the counter, the toppings bar has all of the ingredients that are in Fieri's combinations. These include such things as mushrooms, bacon, caramelized onion , lettuce, tomato and various types of sauces including ketchup.

It is somewhat quicker to order a plain cheeseburger and add your own toppings. This is a popular venue and it is almost constantly producing burgers to meet the demand. Thus, there are almost always fresh burgers ready.

With the combinations, the staff have to prepare one of the burgers, i.e., add the required fixings. But, the combinations do not take much longer. In fact, when I ordered one of the combinations, it was ready within two minutes of placing the order.

Naturally, I preferred the burger that I designed myself over the combination. It was composed exclusively of the things that I like on a burger and thus was tailored to my taste. However, the combination was a very good burger.

According to Chef Fieri: “The key to a great burger is quality ingredients cooked the right way and supported by a tasty cast of characters.” Here, the quality of the meat was readily apparent. These burgers were no tasteless mystery meat. They had flavor.

Freshness enhanced the flavor of both burgers I had. As noted earlier, this venue is constantly producing burgers and so these are not burgers that have forfeited their taste in warming pans or under heat lamps.

Also enhancing the flavor of the meal were the french fries that accompanied the burgers. These were cooked with the skins still attached and were neither greasy nor over-cooked.

There is no cover charge for Guy's Burger Joint. As this is a popular venue, there can be a line to place your order. However, these move quickly.
