Norwegian Gem has been most of her career sailing out of New York. Here, she is coming up the Hudson (also known as the North River at this point) just after dawn. In order to berth at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal (Passenger Ship Terminal), Gem has to make a 90 degree turn to the right (starboard). During this maneuver, the full force of the river's current will be pushing against her port side. More than one ship has crashed into the piers as a result. However, Gem is a powerful ship and makes the turn into her berth without incident.
